Title: Follow-up of MARVELS Brown Dwarf Candidates using EXPERT

Abstract: The SDSS-III MARVELS survey is a comprehensive radial velocity (RV) survey of 3,300 nearby F-K stars, between 7.6 < V < 12.0 conducted in 2008-2012. All of the survey data have been processed with the 2011 version of the MARVELS data pipeline. A total of 28 new brown dwarfs (BD) candidates have been identified in the recently processed Year 3-4 RV data. This proposal requests KPNO 2.1m telescope time with the EXPERT instrument to follow up all of these BD candidates to confirm the detections and characterize their orbits. The results will be used to (1) reveal the overall distribution of the new BDs in parameter space; (2) measure the occurrence rate of BD around FGK type stars; (3) measure metallicities of BD host stars; (4) confirm the discovery of `desert in the brown dwarf desert'; (5) identify additional companions associated with the detected systems. Early MARVELS BD discoveries have made significant contributions to the close in BD study. For instance, MARVELS has found a close giant planet and BD system in a close binary, identified BD with the highest eccentricity for P<300 days in addition to 16 confirmed BDs to date. 11 of these discoveries were confirmed with EXPERT follow-up at the KPNO 2.1m telescope.
