Title: The Heritage of LEGUS: Current Star Formation in Local Galaxies

Abstract: Star formation is one of the key processes that governs the evolution of baryons, and efforts to identify the physical mechanisms that drive, regulate and extinguish star formation are at the heart of much of astrophysics. We are proposing to obtain narrow-band Pa(beta) imaging with WHIRC/WIYN of 13 metal-rich local spiral galaxies which are a subset of the Hubble Space Telescope Cycle 21 LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey) sample in order to determine accurate extinctions within the ionized gas. This will allow the creation of extinction-free H(alpha) maps, that can be combined with high resolution space-based imaging to determine relations between current star formation and star formation rates, as well as the distribution of ionized gas in relation to young stars and stellar clusters in star forming galaxies. This is important to bridge our understanding of resolved stellar populations in galaxies in the local universe with their unresolved counterparts at high redshift.
