Title: Spectroscopic Study of High-z Galaxy Candidates in CANDELS

Abstract: We propose to use Keck/DEIMOS to perform ultra-deep spectroscopy on high-z galaxies selected in the GOODS-N field from the CANDELS program. The aim of this project is to: (1) obtain redshifts for Lyman Break Galaxies expected to be at 6.5 < z < 7 in order to constrain the evolution of the UV luminosity function and the evolving neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium; (2) perform spectroscopy on a population of massive and evolved galaxies at 3 < z < 7, selected based on their Balmer Break strength; (3) fill the remainder of the DEIMOS slitlets with a novel sample of faint star forming galaxies at 1.5 < z < 1.7, selected from HST/WFC3 grism data, measuring line intensities diagnostic of star formation, metallicity, AGN and infall/outflow winds. With these observations, we aim to more than double the number of spectroscopic confirmations of galaxies at z > 6.5, while maximizing the use of the DEIMOS field of view to examine other key galaxy populations. We request two nights with Keck/DEIMOS to achieve our science goals.
