Title: Energy flows in the auroral region of Saturn

Abstract: In May and June 2014 the Cassini spacecraft and the Hubble Space Telescope will undertake a series of co-ordinated auroral observations. Detailed observations will be made of how energy is injected into the upper atmsphere by way of the current systems that run from the magnetopshere to the upper atmosphere. We propose to add Gemini GNIRS to the roster of instruments involved this campaign, an instrument uniquely capable of measuring the thermal resonse of the upper atmopshere to the aforementioned auroral inputs. Understanding how this region responds thermally to changes in auroral activity and how this energy gets re-distributed across the polar cap is critically important not only for this region, but for the thermal balance of the entire planet. We will provide the first ever measurement of the spatial distribution of heating in the auroral region.
