Title: Fading AGN with giant ionized clouds: mode switching and outflows

Abstract: We propose spectroscopic mapping of a set of giant ionized clouds around local AGN, in which the energy budget suggests that the AGN have faded significantly over timescales 10^5 years. The clouds extend 10-35 kpc from the nuclei, affording us access to the history of the nuclear radiation through light-travel time. These results would refine our knowledge of the energy balance (via density), 3D location (through Doppler mapping and models), and ionization structure (via He II/H-beta). Our goal is a stronger test of the idea that many AGN undergo dramatic changes in luminosity and possibly accretion mode over these timescales, which could change the way we view the demographics of AGN in local galaxies.
