Title: Driving the molecular outflow in NGC1266
Abstract:
NGC1266 is a rare nearby example of an otherwise 'normal' early-type galaxy
exhibiting a strong outflow of molecular gas, leading to a complete
evacuation of cold gas in the next 100Myr, thus providing a unique testbed
for understanding galaxy feedback processes. We propose to obtain NIFS+LGS-AO
observations to constrain the distribution and excitation mechanism of
molecular hydrogen on 20pc scales within the central 500pc of NGC1266. This
will provide a direct tracer of the conditions within the molecular outflow,
constraining the driving mechanism behind the outflowing gas and shedding
light on a key stage of galaxy evolution.
