Title: NEW DWARF GALAXIES IN THE LOCAL VOLUME/LOCAL GROUP
Abstract:
Modern cosmological simulations predict a large number of small galaxies in
the Local Volume. Observed number of the galaxies is a few times less than
the predicted. We undertook an attempt to discover low surface brightness
dwarf galaxies in SDSS Stripe 82 area and selected a dozen of candidates.
Observations with small telescopes confirmed galactic nature of the low
surface brightness candidates, but did not allow us to measure distances. We
propose to conduct photometric and spectroscopic observations of five
candidates to the low surface brightness dwarfs anticipated to be in the
nearby Local Volume (3 Mpc) or even at the edge of the Local Group (2 Mpc) in
order to resolve their red giant branch and to measure their radial
velocities. Observations of the dwarfs and confirmation of their distances
will help to study their visible and dark matter content. Confirmed low
surface brightness dwarfs will help to improve search criteria, to apply them
to the whole SDSS footprints, and thus to make steps towards solution of the
missing satellite problem.
