Title: Io's Atmosphere: Density above Volcanoes
Abstract:
We are requesting TEXES time to execute two different types of observations
in order to determine the nature of Io's atmospheric support and the relative
importance of volcanic support on the overall atmospheric density. We will
observe the SO2 absorption spectrum at 8.6 µm to obtain information on the
latitudinal distribution of the atmospheric density directly above volcanoes
on the anti-Jupiter hemisphere. We will also observe Io's atmosphere as it
enters Jupiter eclipse at 18.9 µm. This will investigate if the atmosphere is
concentrated over the volcanoes on the Jupiter-facing hemisphere or if the
atmosphere is predominately sublimation driven. This will be the first time
the bulk atmosphere will be sampled in eclipse.
