Title: Confirmation of Debris Disks from WISE Using High Resolution Mid-IR Imaging
Abstract: We propose to obtain seeing-limited N11.7-band images with COMICS on Subaru of a sample of candidate debris disk-host stars from the WISE All- Sky Data Release. The candidates were identified by cross-correlating the Hipparcos and WISE catalogs and selecting stars with excesses in the W3 (12(mu) m) or W4 (22(mu) m) bands: potential asteroid belt analog hosts. We have already excluded candidates with WISE photometry contaminated by unresolved 2MASS stellar companions within the WISE beam, or by uneven mid-infrared background. However, we have been unable to exclude contamination from very red unresolved sources seen in projection within the WISE beam, but not detected in 2MASS: e.g., background AGN. Subaru has a much higher angular resolution in N11.7 (0.5\arcsec, near diffraction-limited) than WISE at W3 (6.5\arcsec), which will increase the fidelity of our excess detections from the current ~84% confidence level to >99.9%.
