Title: Central Black Hole Mass in AGN with Spiral Galaxy Hosts at z < 0.3

Abstract: Recent work has uncovered a correlation between the black hole mass, M, in the centers of local spiral galaxies and the pitch angles, P, of their spiral arms. We propose to test this M-P correlation at moderate redshifts, using a sample of active galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey showing evidence for spiral structure in their host galaxies. We have selected a sample of 221 galaxies out to redshifts of z=0.64. Here we request WIYN pODI imaging of 69 type-1 AGN with spiral host galaxies at redshifts z < 0.25. We will determine the pitch angles of the spiral arms using a robust 2D-FFT algorithm. The mass of the central black holes will be estimated using the H(beta) line in the SDSS discovery spectra using luminosity-radius scaling relations derived from reverberation mapped AGN. The aim is to establish this M-P relation beyond our local epoch and test for evolution in its form. The longer-term goal is to compute a black hole mass function for late-type galaxies out to moderate redshifts.
