Title: A MOSFIRE Survey of z~2 Emission-Line Galaxies

Abstract: The BPT diagram has been a fundamental tool for studying star formation, chemical abundances, and AGN activity in low-redshift galaxies. However, two of the key BPT diagnostic lines, H(alpha) and [N II], lie at ~6600Aand are not accessible to optical spectrographs beyond z~0.5. Several methods have been developed to replace these lines with other galaxy properties such as mass or color, but the validity of these ``pseudo-BPT'' methods have not yet been tested at high redshifts. We propose for 1.5 nights of Keck/MOSFIRE observations to assemble a pioneering database of galaxy emission-line properties at z~2. These observations will provide measurements of all four classic BPT lines ([O III], H(beta), [N II], and H(alpha)) for a sample of ~200 galaxies at z=2-2.4. This will allow us to test whether the BPT diagnostic can be extended to galaxies in the early universe and recalibrate its various loci if evolutionary trends are observed.
