Title: Relative Escape fraction of ionizing radiation from Ly(alpha) emitters at z=3.3
Abstract: \lya emitters at high redshift have recently been found to exhibit large HI-ionizing emissivities and likely contribute to the reionization of the IGM at z > 6. We are carrying out a survey to measure the HI- ionizing continuum emissivity of an unbiased sample of \lya emitters at z~ 3.3 in the SXDS field. 400 \lya emitters were selected within the field using medium band photometry, resulting in galaxies within a (Delta)(z)=0.2 interval. Here we propose to obtain HYDRB optical spectra of the \lya emitters with the following goals: first, spectroscopically identify those \lya emitters in the proper redshift interval suitable for an accurate measurement of the ionizing emissivity (i.e., (Delta)(z)=0.1); second, we will identify the few (~ 10- 15%) foreground contaminant galaxies; and third, we will identify and possible wikly active galaxies in the sample, and estimate their contribution to the ionizing background at z~ 3.
