Title: WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS): Infrared Cluster Characteristics
Abstract: The WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS) is a project dedicated to comprehensive photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic studies of select open clusters spanning a wide range of ages and metallicities, with the goal of providing a complete and definitive photometric, spectroscopic, and astrometric databases for new fundamental clusters. We propose to map WOCS clusters in the NIR using NEWFIRM on the KPNO 4-m telescope to study the shape and distribution of the luminosity and mass function, and binary fraction. Deep JHK_S photometry is needed to sample the entire luminosity function of these ``prototype'' clusters, and the combination of optical UBVRI and the proposed JHK_S data allows us to identify \emphphotometrically binaries across a wide range of masses, particularly for faint lower main sequence stars. By combining deep NIR and \emphSpitzer IRAC data we provide an individual reddening and extinction, allowing non-cluster stars to be removed, and producing a cleaned cluster CMD. The value of the wide-field survey photometry derives from the combination of field size and photometric accuracy, and for many of the WOCS clusters, the imaged field will extend to the cluster tidal radii and beyond. Thus, these images will provide a truly comprehensive photometric database for the cluster members.
