Title: CTIO REU/PIA Observations: Targets of Opportunity
Abstract:
We request 8 nights on the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9-m as part of the upcoming
2013 CTIO REU/PIA program. The main focus of this proposal will be to
provide direct, hands-on observational experience to 8 undergraduate
students in observational techniques, astronomical data reduction, and
multi-wavelength photometry. In order to expose the students to a
variety of astronomical observations, we will observe various targets of
opportunity (TOOs), including confirmation of candidate supernovae (SNe)
and Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), and the optical afterglows of Gamma Ray
Bursts (GRBs). Any candidate SNe or NEOs that are confirmed, or GRB
afterglows that are detected will be published immediately to the
relevant Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT) circular.
Additionally, any remaining time will be allocated to observe
scientifically interesting targets of the students or their mentors
choosing as time permits between subsequent TOOs.
