Title: Optical Spectroscopy of Hard-band Sources in the XMM Slew Survey
Abstract: The XMM Slew Survey is an all-sky X-ray survey that is sensitive in the hard band (2-12 keV) down to a flux of 4 \times 10^-13 erg\;\rm s^-1 cm^-2. As a hard X-ray survey, it will detect moderately absorbed AGNs (N_H < 10^23 \rmcm^-2); more importantly, the large area coverage makes it possible to detected luminous and rare AGN that have low number densities are missed in survey that cover only a small portion of the sky. The XMM Slew survey offers us a rare opportunity to gain an accurate census of the z<0.2 universe which has not been probed well either by deep X-ray surveys or pointed observations. We propose for four nights at the KPNO 4m telescope to obtain follow-up spectroscopy of optical counterparts, many of which are in fact fairly bright, 2MASS galaxies that have thus far evaded detection as an AGN. In addition to obtaining redshifts for all targets, we will obtain high S/N spectra so as to investigate the root cause for discrepancies between the optical and X-ray classifications noticed in in samples of X-ray selected AGN.
