Title: Spectroscopic Study of High-z Galaxy Candidates in the CANDELS Fields

Abstract: We propose to use KECK/DEIMOS to perform ultra-deep spectroscopy (8- 16 hours per mask) of different populations of high-z (z > 5) galaxies in the CANDELS fields (GOODS-N, EGS and COSMOS). The aim of this project is three-fold: (1) obtain redshifts for z-band drop-out candidates in the GOODS-N and EGS fields, expected to be at 6.5 <z< 8.2. Furthermore, we plan to obtain detailed spectral information (Ly- (alpha) shape and line profile, EW etc) for these galaxies, and for a galaxy at z=7.2 galaxy discovered in our Keck/DEIMOS run (2011A); (2) perform spectroscopy on a population of massive and evolved galaxies at two redshift intervals: 5 < z < 7 and 3 < z < 5, selected based on their Balmer Break strength (Balmer Break Galaxies- BBGs); (3) fill the remainder of the DEIMOS slitlets with a novel sample of faint star forming galaxies 1.5 < z < 1.7, selected from HST/WFC3 grism data, to measure line intensities diagnostic of star formation, metallicity, AGN and infall/outflow wind. There is a concerted effort from CANDELS to obtain the spectroscopy to achieve these goals. This proposal is for the US community-access contribution, for which we need a total of 2 nights on Keck/DEIMOS to complete this portion of this project.
