Title: The starburst-AGN connection in LIRGs and ULIRGs from the 2 Jy Redshift Survey
Abstract: The evolutionary connection between nuclear starbursts and AGN in LIRGs and ULIRGs, which result from galaxy interactions and mergers and produce the bulk of their IR radiations, is not well understood. To this effort, we measure the timescales at which a sample of U/LIRGs evolves by quantifying the contributions of their starbursts and AGN to their IR and bolometric luminosities as well as the age of their starbursts. This will reveal which IR-power source formed first, when the transition between the two occurs, and how starburst age varies with starburst/AGN strength in U/LIRGs. We propose to obtain optical spectra from the RC Spectrograph on the 4m Mayall Telescope to perform stellar population synthesis modeling that will allow us to measure starburst ages to a precision of a few hundred Myr. These spectra will also be used to classify the primary IR- power sources by measuring key emission line ratios. These data will be supplemented with archival IR spectra, with which we will perform spectral decompositions to measure the IR contributions from the starbursts and AGN.
