Title: A deep look into nuclear star clusters
Abstract:
We propose to observe a sample of 3 nuclear star clusters in low-mass
early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Nuclear star clusters can form from
accretion of globular clusters at galaxy centers or from in situ star
formation. Their evolution is regulated by the energy input from the host
galaxy and possibly a supermassive black hole. With this proposal, we try to
assemble a unique dataset of kinematic (Gemini/NIFS), stellar population
(Gemini/GMOS-S) and morphological (archival HST/ACS) data. The dynamical
state, stellar population content and morphology of these clusters will be
compared to theoretical calculations to determine the importance of different
formation scenarios and possible presence of supermassive black holes.
