Title: Large Scale Structure in COSMOS: A Calibration Field for DECam Extragalactic Surveys

Abstract: We propose to use DECam on the Blanco telescope to image a 3 sq. deg. region centered on the COSMOS field to a depth of ~26 AB mag. Our immediate focus is to understand the structures detected in the COSMOS field at z~2-2.3 in a larger context, by selecting U-band dropouts and U-band excess objects from the DECam images and calibrating their selection and photometric-redshift distribution using the existing COSMOS spectroscopic and intermediate band photometric redshifts. The broader motivation is to create a legacy-value dataset that can be used to calibrate photometric redshifts from ongoing and future DECam surveys. COSMOS is the best field in which to do this calibration, given the >40,000 spectroscopic redshifts (including >5,000 at z>2, exquisite 30+band photometric redshifts, and multiwavelength data that are publicly available for this field. The data and catalogs resulting from this program will be made available publicly through the NOAO archive. The U band imaging will also provide a valuable complement to the ongoing time-domain studies in this field with Spitzer, JVLA, PTF, PanSTARRS, and Subaru Hyper-Suprime-Cam.
