Title: Mapping the Inner Structure of OH Megamaser Merger Galaxies
Abstract:
We propose observations with GMOS IFU emission-line spectroscopy to map the
kinematics and ionization structure of the kpc-scale extended emission line
regions revealed by HST imaging in three OH Megamaser galaxies (OHMGs). OHMGs
may represent a critical, short-lived transition phase in which massive,
dense concentrations of molecular gas are triggering intense episodes of star
formation and the onset of AGN fueling, resulting in rapid black hole growth.
The proposed observations will form a key component of a large ongoing study
of a complete sample of OHMGs using HST, Spitzer, Herschel and EVLA which has
the aim of relating the merger state of the OHMG to the growth phase of the
AGN, the nuclear starburst, and the concentration and structure of the
ionized gas on sub-kiloparsec scales. The targets were selected to represent
a range of merger states and relative strength of starburst or AGN activity.
The IFU data will be used to determine the velocity field, search for
outflows or inflows, and identify the ionization sources of the ionized gas
and kinematic components.
