Title: Search for Winds from M Dwarf Stars
Abstract: Winds from cool dwarf stars have never been detected directly, yet their presence and strength can profoundly affect the angular momentum loss in low mass stars and the environments of exoplanets. We propose to search for winds in M dwarf stars that would be evident during the stellar photometric maxima (measured simultaneously) consistent with an open magnetic field configuration. PHOENIX at the KPNO 4-m will measure the near-infrared \ionHe1 line at 1.08(mu) which can signal the onset of a stellar wind. Complementary spectra and semi-empirical models will constrain wind properties. \bf Asymmetric variability in the (lambda)10830 line would indicate mass outflow and provide the first direct measurement of a stellar wind in a low-mass dwarf star.
