Title: Continued Observations of Interacting and Dust Producing CCSNe
Abstract:
Determing whether core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are significant dust
producers and the source of massive amounts of dust seen in high redshift
galaxies is still an important unanswered question in astronomy. Recently,
over 0.1 Msun of cold dust has been found in SN 1987A and the Crab Nebula
which may help prove this is the case. We propose to continue GMOS
observations of two bright, interacting CCSNe 2010jl and 2011ja to look for
signs of condensing dust as well as to help characterise the circumstellar
medium created by mass loss from the progenitor star. These continued
observations will help form a baseline which is essential for disentangling
newly formed ejecta dust from pre-existing dust surrounding the SN.
