Title: Orbital modulation of the black hole binary MAXI J1659-152
Abstract:
We propose to observe the black hole binary MAXI J1659-152 with
Gemini/GMOS-S. Based on X-ray observations, a 2.4-hr orbital period is
proposed and if it is true, MAXI J1659-152 will be the shortest orbital
period black hole binary system. The aim of this observation is to
obtain the best optical lightcurve of the source during its quiescent
state. This will provide an ultimate test of the proposed 2.4-hr
orbital period of the system. We will also apply lightcurve modeling
technique to extract the system geometry.
