Title: Polluted, peculiar, and duplicitous: The true nature of local white dwarfs
Abstract: A complete, unbiased, local sample of white dwarfs is essential to determine population properties. We have selected a sample of white dwarf candidates based on their proper motion and colors. Since 2007 we have obtained high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of ~ 150 new white dwarfs in order to determine their individual chemical composition, effective temperature, and surface gravity and we propose to complete our survey with ~ 50 remaining objects. Also, as the remaining sample contains increasingly fainter objects, it is likely to contribute to the less-studied, low-luminosity bins and add more distant objects with peculiar Galactic velocities. These results will expand our knowledge of the local sample of white dwarfs and allow us to determine their kinematical properties which will help in establishing their Galactic population membership. We present an update of our progress on this project with selected highlights, and a summary of the work remaining.
