Title: Optical Spectroscopic Observation of z~5 Quasar Candidates

Abstract: We propose to perform optical spectroscopic observation of quasar candidates at 5 < z < 5.7 with z < 19.5 AB mag. The redshift range corresponds to a gap in the epoch between the early, vigorous evolution of super massive black holes (SMBHs) at z ~ 6-7 and the epoch (z ~ 4) where more established, the most massive SMBHs ~10^10 M_\odot are identified in active galaxy. In addition, the rapid evolution in the fraction of HI in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is coming to an end at this epoch. The number of quasars at this redshift range, however, is still small due to technical limitations of current large area surveys. Since 2009, we have been conducting a quasar survey in multi-bands, including data from our custom designed Is and Iz filters. Together with WISE data, we selected more than 20 high redshift quasar candidates in ~2,000 deg^2 area so far. Using spectrometers in NOAO, we propose to observe more than 20 quasar candidates at z > 5 that are accessible during 2012B, in order to (i) identify their redshifts; (ii) measure their black hole masses; and (iii) estimate IGM optical depth at z ~ 5. Our observation will contribute towards the understanding of the rapid evolution of SMBHs and the IGM ionization state between 5 < z < 5.7. The result will also be used to improve the selection technique.
