Title: SparsePak Kinematics of Tidally Interacting Galaxy Pairs
Abstract: The merger of galaxies and their associated dark matter halos is a fundamental process which determines their mass growth and structural/kinematic properties. The initial orbital parameters of mergers can have a strong impact on the angular momentum of the merger remnants. Current cosmological models have great difficulty reproducing the angular momentum of both disk-dominated and bulge-dominated galaxies. However, theoretical predictions for the orbital distribution of mergers have never been observationally tested. We propose to obtain SparsePak H(alpha) velocity maps for a test sample of nearby tidally interacting pairs. Their morphological and kinematics properties will be used to constrain their merger orbital parameters, and place some of the first direct observational constraints on this unknown but fundamental distribution.
