Title: Orbital Periods for Two Unique, Recently Discovered AM CVn Systems
Abstract:
AM CVn systems are rare, ultra-compact binaries which are astrophysical
laboratories that allow us to study phenomena including stellar evolution,
accretion disk physics, gravitational waves and other aspects of general
relativity. They are the He-rich counterparts to cataclysmic variables. We
have discovered 7 such systems from Palomar Transient Factory data and here
request Gemini time for phase-resolved spectroscopy of two unique systems to
find orbital periods. This will provide information towards our goal of
understanding the evolution and population distribution of these unique
systems.
