Title: A Great Spot on a Kepler L Dwarf

Abstract: We are using NASA's Kepler Mission to obtain an unprecedented two- year photometric time series on a nearby L1 dwarf. We request MMT optical spectra and KPNO near-infrared photometry taken simultaneously with Kepler photometry to enable the physical interpretation of the variability. Variations seen in other L dwarfs have been attributed to clouds, flares, and (magnetic) starspots, but the interpretation remains ambiguous due to limited time coverage and the lack of simultaneous spectral data. Multiwavelength data can distinguish between magnetic spots and dust clouds.
