Title: Targeted Samples of the Hot Stellar Content in the Southern Sky

Abstract: This proposal is a continuation of our program to identify the hot stellar component - in particular, pure-hydrogen-atmosphere (``DA'') white dwarfs - in the Southern sky. These objects will be vital for the absolute color calibration of future Southern Sky CCD-based imaging surveys and facilities, such as the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. Previously, we have focused on identifying candidate hot stars by performing u-band imaging within the fields of the Blanco Cosmology Survey (BCS), a deep imaging survey in SDSS griz and performing a u-g, g-r color selection. Here, we wish to expand our program in two ways: (1) performing a u-band imaging with the CTIO-1m telescope within the footprint of the PreCam Survey, a bright (r_lim=17 for S/N=50 point sources) calibration survey within the footprint of the upcoming DES using the DES grizy filter system; and (2) performing medium-resolution spectroscopy on the CTIO-1.5m telescope to classify our candidates from our previous imaging runs, as well as candidates from other sources, and determine their effective surface temperatures and surface gravities. In addition to providing calibration stars for future surveys and facilities, this data set will permit studies of the white dwarf luminosity function and of Galactic structure.
