Title: Mass estimation of four z 1 ACT/SZE Discovered Galaxy Clusters

Abstract: We propose to use GMOS to obtain spectroscopic redshifts and dynamical mass estimates for a sample of extremely massive high-redshift galaxy clusters discovered at high significance via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and confirmed via optical and near-infrared observations from the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-m telescope. These observations will extend our Gemini calibration of the SZE signal vs. mass correlation beyond redshift of 1 that will enable a better measurement of sigma_8 and w from SZE surveys. These data will also allow us to study the evolution, star formation rates and stellar populations in the most massive clusters at z 1. The observations will provide independent cluster mass estimates with which we will confront with expectations of standard Lambda-CDM cosmological models, where bound objects grow via gravitational instability from Gaussian initial density fluctuations.
