Title: Chemical evolution of two Sculptor galaxies through the abundances of planetary nebulae and H II regions
Abstract:
In the context of detecting radial metallicity gradients in spiral galaxies
to constraint the chemical evolutionary models we propose to perform MOS
spectroscopy on two Sculptor galaxies, NGC 247 and NGC 7793, to detect the
emission-line spectra of their planetary nebula (PN) and H II region
populations. The contemporary studies of the two stellar populations will
yield to chemical and time constraining of the galaxy formation and evolution
models, with the PN abundances corresponding to the early stages of the
galaxies, and the H II region ones carrying the information of the chemical
evolution through out the galaxies lifetime. Metallicity gradients and
chemical enrichment will be determined. PNe have not been detected before in
these galaxies, thus the proposed observations will also yield to their PN
luminosity function via the planned multi-filter pre-imaging.
