Title: The Layered Skin of the Elephant's Trunk
Abstract: \null\vskip 0.1in Narrowband images of the Carina Nebula taken by the PI with NEWFIRM last March uncovered an offset between the recombination Br(gamma) line and the fluorescent H_2 (1-0) line at interfaces where the H II region transitions into the photodissociation region. This proposal seeks to quantify how this offset changes between star formation regions that have markedly differing ionizing environments by observing two other massive star formation regions that contain bright-rimmed globules, Cyg OB2 and IC 1396A (the Elephant Trunk Nebula). The proposed images will provide the basic test suite for the next generation of dynamical PDR emission-line models, and the new work has implications for ongoing laboratory experiments of fluid dynamical instabilities driven by radiative hydrodynamics.
