Title: The Most Massive Galaxies and Black Holes
Abstract:
Following our measurement of the most massive black holes in the
local Universe with the integral-field unit (IFU) on GMOS-N, we propose
to measure supermassive black holes in five galaxies with the IFU on
GMOS-S. Our target galaxies comprise a representative sample for
quantitatively exploring the high-mass ends of the scaling relations
between black hole mass, galaxy luminosity, and stellar velocity
dispersion. Determining the slope and scatter of these relations will
distinguish between different scenarios for galaxy mergers along the red
sequence and between hierarchical versus stochastic growth for the most
massive black holes.
