Title: A Southern Hemisphere Survey of Black Holes
Abstract:
We propose to measure black hole masses in eight galaxies with large
stellar velocity dispersions, by recording stellar kinematics with the
integral-field unit (IFU) on GMOS-S. Recent updates to the largest
known black hole masses and corresponding black hole-bulge scaling
relations indicate that a dozen or more galaxies host black holes
detectable with seeing-limited observations. Improved measurements of
the relationships between black hole mass, galaxy luminosity, and
stellar velocity dispersion will provide insight to the processes that
drive the evolution of massive galaxies.
