Title: Young planetary objects in the \rho Ophiuchi dark cloud
Abstract: We propose to acquire GNIRS near-infrared low-dispersion spectra to confirm the coolest brown dwarf candidates we have identified in the \rho Ophiuchi cloud. These candidates have been selected by methane imaging with possible absorption features at both 1.6 (mu) m and 3.3 (mu) m, i.e., with criteria more stringent than previous studies by infrared colors alone. Some of these candidates share the same proper motions with known young star members in the cloud. At a distance of 130 pc and an age of 1 Myr, these candidates, once confirmed, will be the lowest mass (< 4M_J ) population found so far in the \rho Ophiuchi cloud, and would form a valuable substellar sample to investigate their formation mechanism and relation with molecular materials and other young stellar populations in the cloud.
