Title: Physical Properties of z~1.5 Galaxies as a Function of Spectral Type

Abstract: The high-quality photometry of the NEWFIRM medium-band survey has allowed us to characterize the galaxy population at z=0.5-2.0 using a novel approach. We have divided the galaxy population at z=[0.5,2] into 32 different spectral types, and constructed composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs). These SEDs enable us to pre-select'' galaxies of particular spectral type. We propose to use GNIRS to observe rest- frame optical emission lines for only few galaxies of each type, and systematically study emission-line properties as a function of galaxy type. This is the most efficient method to obtain spectroscopic samples that span the entire galaxy population, with a well-understood selection. This study will give new insights into star formation activity, the origin of the mass-metallicity relation, the major phase of black-hole growth, and the dust properties of high-redshift galaxies. \it This program was approved for 2011B (band 1). However, because of heavy oversubscription of time for targets with RA of 10 hours, only half the requested time could be scheduled. Thus, here we propose to observe the remaining galaxies, and complete our 2011B program.
