Title: Identifying Photometric and Chromospheric Activity Correlations of Kepler Stars
Abstract: The recent public release of lightcurves from the Kepler mission provides the first opportunity for investigating the intrinsic photometric variability of large numbers of stars. Since most such variability is believed to be due to starspots related to magnetic activity, we intend to test that hypothesis by obtaining chromospheric observations of stellar activity with Ca II H and K emission for select Kepler stars. We will compare overall photometric variability with R^'_HK for all stars, and test whether the magnitude of the variability or its periodicity correlates with stellar activity for a range of spectral types. This analysis will inform theories of stellar evolution and activity, improve the efficiency of planet detection around active stars, and constrain theories of planet formation and disk dispersal. This project was previously awarded time, most of it lost to poor weather. We request time to complete the project and to extend it to include other types of stars, thereby allowing us to derive and calibrate age-activity relations and permitting the determination of stellar ages from chromospheric activity.
