Title: Gas around Galaxies over the last 7 billion years

Abstract: We propose to measure the distribution and properties of the gas in the IGM and Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM), and the galaxies located in the same volume, covering its evolution over the last 7 billion years. We will use Gemini/GMOS to obtain spectroscopic data of galaxies between 0<z<1 around the sightlines of QSOs that we (Morris et al.) have observed in the near and far UV with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the HST. Using this data we will measure the HI-galaxy, CIV-galaxy and OVI-galaxy cross-correlation functions at unprecedented quality, and determine their dependences on absorber and galaxy properties up to redshifts poorly studied ( 0.4-1). Using this approach, we will compare these observational results with those from state-of-the-art numerical simulations, allowing us to investigate the relative contribution of infall, supernovae and AGN feedback in shaping the relationship between galaxies and the gaseous contents of the Universe.
