Title: Spectroscopic confirmation of a compact binary system within a supernova remnant
Abstract:
We propose to observe the central compact object (CCO) of the
supernova remnant G308.3-1.4 with Gemini-S to reveal the nature of the
object. From the X-ray data, we found a 1.4-hr periodicity, and by
combining with the X-ray spectrum as well as the optical spectral energy
distribution, we suggest that the source is an X-ray binary system. We
propose to obtain an optical spectrum with Gemini-S/GMOS to investigate
the nature of the optical emission and the results will provide the
first direct evidence for an accreting binary as a CCO.
