Title: Gas and Galaxies in the Cosmic Web
Abstract:
We propose to measure the distribution and properties of the gas in the IGM
and Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM), and galaxies located in the same volume. We
will use Gemini/GMOS to obtain spectroscopic data of galaxies between 0<z<0.4
around QSO sightlines that have high quality HST/COS far-UV spectroscopy, for
which we have direct access. This GMOS dataset corresponds to a fundamental
part of a larger gas/galaxy survey carried out by our collaboration. The
final survey will assemble galaxy data from SDSS, 6dF, HYDRA, and GMOS around
HST/COS targeted sightlines aiming to map the `Cosmic Web' in both gas and
galaxies at unprecedented quality. Using this dataset we will be able to
investigate the gas/galaxy connection (including feedback processes), its
dependence on galaxy environment and its evolution with cosmic time. We will
also refine the local baryon census and measure the metallicity of gas in
voids.
