Title: Mid-IR Exploration of an Edge-On Protoplanetary Disk
Abstract:
We propose multi-wavelength T-ReCS mid-IR imaging of the central region of
the Herbig Ae/Be star VV Serpens. This dramatic system has an edge-on disk
that is casting a shadow across the much bigger envelope extending out to
thousands of AU. Our sub-arcsec images are key to a full interpretaion of a
whole range of other observations including extensive Spitzer imaging and
spectroscopy, and they will provide serious constraints on disk models. In
particular, the imaging proposed observations of VV Ser will permit us to: 1.
Determine the disk size at mid-IR wavelengths; 2. Examine the disk column
density along lines of sight of different z; 3. Study how the interface zone
where the disk ?surface? and the inner envelope merge, and thereby probe the
detailed relationship of disk and envelope; 4. Characterize the amount of
flaring as a function of distance from the star; and 4. Estimate the dust
temperature versus distance from the star for both the disk surface and inner
envelope.
