Title: A WISE Long Period Comet Survey
Abstract:
While the short period comet nucleus population has begun to be
investigated regarding the most basic parameters, size and albedo, the
long-period comet population remains relatively uncharacterized. Yet,
the population is considerably different in origin and evolution from
the short period comets. We propose two nights of observing using the
SOI imager on the SOAR 4 meter telescope to obtain the optical
brightness of 18 long-period comet nuclei to complete the WISE-observed
sample. The WISE observed sample will comprise the largest long-period
comet nucleus survey in existence and at least double the number of
known sizes and albedos amongst this unique class of comets.
