Title: Palomar Transient Factory: A Discovery Machine
Abstract:
The primary focus of PTF for the first two major seasons was on
supernovae searches. This was obtained by a 5-day cadence. Having
accumulated over 1,000 spectroscopically identified SN and identified a
new class of luminous supernovae we are now moving to a higher cadence
search. The initial results (shock breakout, relativistic explosions,
AM CVn outbursts, nuclear disruption event) bode well for the proposed
program. We seek KPNO/Mayall time for classification and follow up.
With over two years of fully automated operations under our belt, PTF
has now demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that we can reliably
deliver newly discovered transient sources with sufficient regularity to
justify such a request.
