Title: Imaging the Aquarius and Microscopium Supercluaters of Galaxies
Abstract:
We propose R and V imaging of nine Abell clusters in the Aquarius
Supercluster and another seven clusters in the Microscopium
Supercluster. These superclusters are two of the four identified
highest density peaks in the cluster spatial distribution, and their
spatial and mass scales are such that gravitational and dark energy
effects on the supercluster dynamics are about equal in magnitude. The
images will provide precise photometry of near-edge-on spirals and
bright ellipticals to serve as bases for follow-on spectroscopic
observations of supercluster dynamics that we are planning.
We will determine distances to these clusters through Tully-Fisher
and Dn-sigma analyses of the spiral and elliptical galaxies,
respectively, to show whether or not these supercluster knots have
broken with the Hubble flow and are now in collapse. These analyses
will provide evidence of the effects of both dark matter and dark energy
on these scales. Our new images will also be used for multiple analyses
of properties within these extreme regions, such as luminosity function
variations and color-magnitude and type segregation.
