Title: Detecting Cold Flows around 2 < z < 3 Galaxies
Abstract: We are pursuing a comprehensive campaign to survey the gaseous environments of z ~ 2.5 star-forming galaxies. Using echelle spectra of bright QSOs behind foreground Lyman break galaxies with small impact parameters R_\perp < 150 kpc (\theta < 20\arcsec), we will perform detailed absorption line analyses of gas inside these galaxies' virial radius. Our goal is to directly constrain galactic scale outflows and the possible `cold-accretion' of gas onto galaxies in the young Universe. Detailed absorption line modeling will allow us to measure cold gas masses, kinematics, metallicity, abundance patterns, temperature, ionization state, and the density and sizes of absorbing clouds. Our strategy is to deeply image ~ 30 fields centered on QSOs with existing Keck/HIRES, VLT/UVES or Magellan/MIKE echelle spectra, and then selectively target only those with small impact parameter LBG candidates for follow-up spectroscopy. Here we propose to use KPNO/Mosaic to obtain the deep UBVR imaging necessary to select foreground galaxy candidates for spectroscopic confirmation.
