Title: Stellar Streams and Star Formation in the Outskirts of HALOGAS Spiral Galaxies

Abstract: We propose to obtain deep, wide-field observations in U, B, and H(alpha) of ten nearby spiral galaxies in the HALOGAS sample to map stellar streams and outer disk star forming regions. Our WSRT HALOGAS survey is studying HI gas accretion and halo gas in an unbiased sample of spiral galaxies to unprecedented sensitivity. Our goal is to understand the connection between past mergers and current gas accretion and to search for current star formation that may enrich accreting gas. We have new deep INT WFC r’ band images that show stellar halos and streams extending in some cases as far as the HI. However, we need color information to characterize their stellar populations. We also need deep, high-resolution data in a blue band to determine ages, luminosities, and masses of the star formation in th outer disks and halos that GALEX sees. The KPNO 4-m mosaic images will provide the depth and wide-field necessary to study faint stellar populations in extended HI halo gas and better understand the sources of accreting gas.
