Title: The Nature of the Hydrated Material on Europa
Abstract:
We plan to use NIFS to map the H-band and K-band spectrum of hydrated
materials on Europa with high spatial and spectral resolution, in order to
constrain the chemical nature of these materials, in particular to determine
the chemistry of the hydrated salts which may be an important component of
this material. This information will in turn constrain the chemistry of
Europa's ice shell and ocean, and will help to evaluate the potential of
near-infrared spectroscopy for the descoped Jupiter Europa Orbiter mission.
