Title: Deep Astrometric Standards (DAS)
Abstract: The advent of next generation imaging telescopes - instruments with wide fields and huge Gigapixel cameras - create a critical need for deep and precise reference frames for astrometric calibrations. The Deep Astrometric Standards (DAS) program aims to establish such a frame by providing astrometry at the 5-10 mas accuracy level to the depth of an equivalent of V=25. The available datasets of positions, proper motions of faint stars, and g,i photometry will enable us to address fundamental questions of Galactic disk formation and evolution, stellar buildup and mass assembly via merger events. The DAS images and catalogs will be an example of the type of datasets that large survey telescopes will output near the Galactic plane and can be used to design and test the data-reduction pipelines. To capitalize on the total of 402 CCD Mosaic frames obtained in 2006 and to derive the first ever ultra-deep ground-based proper motions in the southern DAS field in Sagittarius, we propose to obtain the required second-epoch observations.
