Title: Towards a Better Understanding of Neutral Hydrogen in Galaxy Groups: The Search for Stars in the M81/M82 Galaxy Group HI Clouds
Abstract: We propose to use the KPNO 2.1m telescope to observe the five intra- group neutral hydrogen (HI) clouds in the M81/M82 galaxy group in both H(alpha) and continuum emission, to determine whether they host HII regions. These observations will be a key factor in determining the origin of these and other HI clouds in galaxy groups and the role that such clouds play in metal enrichment of the interstellar medium. In addition, these observations will provide valuable insight into outlying/extragalactic HII regions. The M81/M82 galaxy group is well-known to have undergone recent, strong galaxy interactions. These observations will be the first targeted search for outlying HII regions within HI clouds in a strongly interacting galaxy group environment. Therefore, this study will be particularly useful in exploring the complex interplay between galaxy interactions, HI gas, and star formation.
