Title: Spectra of star clusters in the LMC as an age indicator.
Abstract:
We propose to obtain spectrophotometry for an extensive sample of
LMC star clusters of different ages. Our sample of star clusters have
previously established ages and metallicities from modern, stellar,
color-magnitude diagrams and the analysis of individual red giant
spectra. The new, integrated spectra we will obtain with this program
will provide a critical calibration to modernize and improve
spectroscopic studies of unresolved, extragalactic stellar clusters.
Integrated spectroscopy is a widely used means to obtain ages and
metallicities of star clusters in distant galaxies, enabling their star
formation and chemical enrichment history to be revealed. However, no
significant age calibration of the integrated spectroscopic features of
stellar clusters have been obtained in more than two decades.
